What do you need?
Over the years, I've changed in ways I never expected. Sure, I've aged—though I don't feel as old as the years suggest. Many of you probably feel the same.
While most changes that come with age are predictable, what has surprised me most is how profoundly my perspectives have shifted. The catalyst? Experiencing new and different places.
Leaving rural, conservative America for urban, liberal settings was more than eye-opening—it was transformative. I could spend hours talking about how those experiences changed my life and reshaped my worldview.
Sometimes you simply have to immerse yourself in a different setting and expose yourself to different thinking to truly understand other viewpoints.
Another life-changing experience came from working with people from radically different backgrounds. You can't fully grasp what someone's life is like until you spend time with them and hear their story firsthand.
I can recall perspectives I held in the past that are, frankly, too embarrassing to admit now. My views on homelessness, drug addiction, incarceration, and alcoholism all shifted once I spent time with people facing these struggles and understood that there's always more to the story.
Many of my ideas about politics, morality, choice—even my faith—have undergone significant reconsideration. Before you jump to conclusions about me, understand this: I haven't rejected my core beliefs.
No, my foundational beliefs are still there. They've evolved, though, and I'd like to think for the better. One thing I'm certain of? I'm less certain about a lot of things.
Here's what I know for sure: without help, many of us will never overcome what's holding us back.
There are several reasons we resist asking for help—our independent nature, pride, bootstrap mentality. These can all undermine our efforts to grow.
But there are far more reasons why we will get what we need. Our tenacious, get-it-done, overcoming, figure-it-out, never-quit mentalities are exactly why we'll do what's necessary—once we realize what that is.
One thing I've found to be universal: once someone sees and begins to believe their life can be different, better, and more fulfilling than the one they're living, they want it to change. All that's needed then is the opportunity.
When we're offered that chance, let's take it.
